Artificial intelligence represents a fundamental platform shift, not merely a speculative bubble, according to Matthew Prince, Co-Founder and CEO of Cloudflare. While acknowledging the significant capital being poured into the sector, much of which may be wasted, Prince remains steadfast in his conviction that AI is fundamentally reshaping the technological landscape, creating immense, lasting value.
Prince conveyed this perspective during a recent interview on CNBC’s Worldwide Exchange, discussing the broader implications of AI for the tech industry, Cloudflare’s strategic positioning, and the imperative to cultivate future talent. His insights offered a pragmatic view of the current AI boom, distinguishing between genuine innovation and speculative frenzy.
Addressing concerns about an AI bubble, Prince stated, “AI is for sure real. There’s an enormous amount of value which is going to be created from these AI companies.” He candidly estimated that "99 out of every 100 dollars that’s being spent on AI is probably being just lit on fire." However, he quickly tempered this by adding that the remaining dollar is likely to become "the most valuable company in the world someday." This nuanced perspective underscores the high-stakes, high-reward nature of the current AI investment cycle, where many ventures will fail, but a few will yield unprecedented success.
Cloudflare’s strategy in this environment is akin to selling "picks and shovels" during a gold rush. Rather than placing direct bets on specific AI models or applications, the company focuses on providing the essential infrastructure that all AI builders require. "We’re selling the tools that AI companies need in order to be able to build their businesses," Prince explained. This agnostic approach allows Cloudflare to benefit regardless of which specific AI innovations ultimately prevail, positioning itself as a critical enabler across the entire AI ecosystem. Indeed, by Cloudflare's estimates, approximately 80% of leading AI companies are already its customers.
A recent partnership with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) further illustrates Cloudflare's strategic commitment to foundational support. Oracle, a long-time partner, recognized early that the future of enterprise computing is multi-cloud, not uni-cloud. This partnership allows Cloudflare to natively offer its services to Oracle customers, enhancing speed and security across diverse cloud environments. Prince predicted that other hyperscalers would follow Oracle’s lead, as customers increasingly demand the flexibility and resilience of distributed cloud architectures.
Beyond infrastructure, Prince emphasized the critical role of human talent in navigating this platform shift. He highlighted the generational aspect of AI adoption, noting, "50-year-old CEOs like myself aren’t going to be the ones that teach companies how to take advantage of AI. We need to learn from the next generation." To that end, Cloudflare is making a significant investment in future talent, planning to bring on 1,111 interns in 2026. This initiative is designed not only to train the next wave of tech leaders but also to infuse the company with fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to AI from those who have grown up with the technology.

Prince views AI as the "next platform shift," following the progression from web browsers to social media and then to mobile. This new era, which he describes as an "agentic future," will fundamentally alter how information is consumed, drawing parallels to the futuristic interactions depicted in "The Jetsons" with Rosie the Robot. This shift will have radical impacts across industries, from media companies and established brands to small businesses. Cloudflare’s objective is to equip everyone with the necessary tools to not only survive but thrive in this evolving landscape.
Cloudflare remains dedicated to providing the robust, reliable, and secure services that will empower businesses to adapt to the profound changes brought about by AI. The company’s focus on foundational tools and its investment in a new generation of talent reflect a deep understanding of AI’s transformative power and the strategic foresight required to navigate its complexities.
