The tectonic plates of technology shift every couple of decades, fundamentally altering how humanity interacts with data and systems. Dato’ Fadzli Shah, Co-Founder of Zetrix, addressed attendees at the Bloomberg Business Summit at ASEAN in Kuala Lumpur, outlining his vision for how the region can strengthen its digital economy and competitiveness through the advancement of artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies. He posited that the current era marks such a pivotal shift, with AI and blockchain poised to redefine global data interaction and consumption.
Shah emphasized that these emerging technologies are not merely incremental improvements but represent a profound transformation in how data is processed, shared, and utilized worldwide. "Blockchain and AI is going to change and is changing the way that we work with data, we consume data, but also how data is processed and ultimately consumed all over the world," he stated, underscoring the pervasive impact these innovations are already having. This perspective highlights a crucial insight for founders and VCs: these are not niche technologies but foundational layers for the next wave of digital evolution.
For ASEAN, this technological inflection point presents a unique and compelling opportunity. The region, a coalition of ten member states boasting a collective population of approximately 680 million, is characterized by a youthful, digitally savvy demographic. This vibrant, tech-literate populace, already deeply integrated into global digital platforms like Facebook and TikTok, provides a fertile ground for the adoption and scaling of new digital infrastructures. Such a large, engaged user base offers an unparalleled environment for real-world application and refinement of AI and blockchain solutions.
Zetrix, Shah’s company, is actively engaged in building public permissioned blockchain infrastructure, working closely with governments in Malaysia and China. He noted China's significant lead in this area, remarking, "objectively speaking, China is miles ahead of everyone. There is no guesswork, there's no statistics and forecasting in play in China; everything is entirely data-driven." This data-centric approach, focusing on provenance and traceability rather than speculative crypto-assets, offers a blueprint for how nations can integrate blockchain into their national digital frameworks. ASEAN, he believes, is positioned to follow a similar trajectory, fostering data-driven innovation across its member states.
A critical, often overlooked aspect of AI deployment, according to Shah, is the imperative for responsible development. The cautionary tale of Microsoft's Tay AI chatbot, which devolved into "a racist bigot within 24 hours" after being unleashed on the internet, serves as a stark reminder. This incident vividly illustrates the dangers of "unbridled deployment of AI" and the necessity of embedding cultural norms and ethical considerations into AI systems from inception.
The diverse cultural, economic, and linguistic landscape of ASEAN makes it an ideal "testbed and sandbox" for these technologies. This diversity, rather than being a hindrance, offers a unique advantage. Experimenting with AI and blockchain in such a varied environment allows for the development of robust, culturally sensitive, and universally applicable solutions. It provides a real-world laboratory to understand how AI interacts with different societal structures, ensuring that biases are identified and mitigated, and that the technology serves, rather than undermines, human interests across a broad spectrum of societies.

ASEAN’s role as a representative of the "Global South" further amplifies its significance in this technological shift. By pioneering responsible AI and blockchain adoption, the region can demonstrate models that are not solely dictated by Western or Eastern technological hegemonies. This can foster a more inclusive and equitable digital future, ensuring that the benefits of these transformative technologies are accessible and beneficial to a wider global population, addressing the unique challenges and opportunities of developing economies. This collective approach could lead to innovations that resonate beyond its borders.
The convergence of innovations from the East and West is inevitable, but ASEAN’s unique position allows it to act as a crucial bridge and a proving ground for the ethical and practical integration of AI and blockchain. The region’s proactive engagement with these technologies, particularly in collaboration with governmental bodies to build national digital infrastructures, underscores a pragmatic and forward-thinking approach. This strategic embrace of innovation, coupled with a keen awareness of its societal implications, positions ASEAN not just as a consumer of digital advancements, but as a significant contributor to their responsible global evolution.
