The Sovereign AI Unit is a UK government initiative acting as a state-backed venture capital fund to invest in domestic AI firms. It aims to bridge the gap between research and commercial success, providing not only funding (£1M-£20M) but also access to supercomputers (1M GPU hours), R&D support, fast-track visas, and government procurement opportunities. Launched by Tech Secretary Liz Kendall in April 2026, the fund is chaired by venture capitalist James Wise.
