AI Startup Funding Reached $103 Billion in 2024 According to HumanX and Crunchbase

According to a comprehensive report from HumanX and Crunchbase, global AI startup funding reached unprecedented levels in 2024, totaling over $103 billion—a significant 84% growth compared to $56 billion in 2023. This surge positions AI as the leading sector for global venture capital investment, representing nearly one-third of total startup funding worldwide.

Foundation model companies continued to attract substantial investment, receiving roughly one-third of total AI funding ($31 billion). Leading this category were OpenAI ($17.6 billion raised), Anthropic ($14.3 billion), Celonis ($1.8 billion), Scale AI ($1.6 billion), and Inflection AI ($1.5 billion). Notably, Anthropic recently announced an additional Series E funding round of $3.5 billion at a valuation of $61.5 billion, emphasizing strong ongoing investor confidence.

Beyond foundational models, two-thirds of 2024’s AI funding was directed toward sectors that leverage AI advancements, including autonomous driving, healthcare, robotics, cybersecurity, military applications, and AI infrastructure providers such as semiconductor and data management companies.

Regionally, the US dominated AI funding rounds, capturing approximately $80 billion, or 78% of global totals. The San Francisco Bay Area alone accounted for $62 billion, representing 60% of worldwide AI startup investment and showcasing its status as the global epicenter for artificial intelligence ventures.

The report highlights a notable industry shift toward consolidation, revealing that nearly 30% of the 153 private AI startups presenting at the upcoming HumanX conference are likely acquisition targets within the next 12 months, as identified by Crunchbase’s predictive analytics. In contrast, only 23 startups are forecasted to raise new rounds of funding in the immediate future, highlighting a strategic pivot from broad funding activity to targeted mergers and acquisitions.

The gender gap in AI funding rounds has notably widened, with female co-founded startups attracting $18 billion—20% of total AI funding—down from $22 billion (47% of total funding) in the previous year, highlighting ongoing diversity challenges within venture-backed AI.
