GitButler Raises $22M Series A

The software engineering landscape is undergoing a seismic shift, driven by AI. A significant and growing portion of code is now generated by AI agents, which are also becoming crucial for understanding codebases, debugging, and performance optimization. Developers are transitioning from pure coders to system architects and orchestrators.

This evolution marks a new era where software creation scales dramatically, becoming abundant, dynamic, and increasingly machine-generated. Traditional developer tools, particularly version control systems like Git, are struggling to keep pace.

While coding agents can now perform tasks like committing code and opening pull requests via the command line, the underlying Git model, designed over 20 years ago for human collaboration, is breaking down. It assumes a single, atomic change, which clashes with modern workflows where developers manage multiple AI agents working in parallel on different tasks.

GitButler is addressing this gap by redesigning version control for agentic coding. Their platform introduces native support for stacked branching, agent-specific commands, rich metadata, and parallel branching. Parallel branches allow multiple isolated branches to exist simultaneously without duplicating the entire repository, offering the benefits of worktrees without the overhead.

Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has led GitButler's Series A funding round, recognizing the urgent need for these modern version control primitives. The company is founded by a team with deep roots in source control and startups.

Founding Team and Vision

Leading GitButler is CEO Scott Chacon, a co-founder of GitHub and author of "Pro Git." Chacon is renowned for his work in making Git more accessible.

He is joined by technical lead Kiril Videlov and German startup operator Anne Leuschner. This team is focused on creating version control solutions tailored for the AI-driven future of software development.
