Amazon Weighs New Multibillion-Dollar Anthropic Investment

Amazon is reportedly considering a new multibillion-dollar investment in AI startup Anthropic. This potential Anthropic investment follows Amazon's prior $13.8 billion commitment.

Expanding AI Capabilities and Infrastructure

Anthropic, a prominent AI startup, previously secured $13.8 billion from Amazon, primarily through convertible notes. These notes allow conversion into equity. Furthermore, Anthropic collaborates with Amazon Web Services (AWS) on AI chip development and market initiatives. The company also uses cloud infrastructure from both AWS and Google Cloud for its AI projects.

Anthropic caps Amazon's stake below 33%, a similar arrangement applies to Google, another significant investor. Google has invested over $3 billion in Anthropic across multiple rounds. Anthropic's most advanced AI model, Claude 4 Opus, launched in May. This hybrid reasoning model offers instant or detailed responses and excels in retaining information.

The company provides its AI models via a chatbot, also named Claude, and an application programming interface. These offerings generate an annualized revenue run rate exceeding $4 billion. This figure marks an increase from $3 billion in May. Consequently, Anthropic partnered with AWS on Project Rainier. This initiative focuses on a large data center campus in New Carlisle, Indiana.

AWS plans to expand its Indiana campus to 30 data centers, up from an initial 16. The campus will draw 2.2 gigawatts of power. It will also feature tens of thousands of Amazon EC2 UltraServers. Each system includes four servers, each containing 16 AWS Trainium2 chips. The Trainium2 is a custom AI accelerator, offering double the performance and power efficiency of its predecessor.

Other large language model developers are also seeking substantial funding. Mistral AI is reportedly in talks for a $1 billion equity round. Additionally, xAI seeks a $20 billion investment at a $120 billion valuation. Anthropic remains a key competitor to OpenAI in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
