The razor-thin margins separating Olympic gold from silver are no longer left to chance. Snowflake, the Official Data Cloud Provider for USA Bobsled/Skeleton, is arming athletes with the data-driven insights needed to shave off critical hundredths of a second. This collaboration, highlighted by conversations with Olympic champions and coaches, reveals how data is becoming as crucial as physical prowess.

For sports like bobsled, where a 400-500 pound sled is propelled by sheer human power, the push start is everything. Relying on instinct alone can lead to suboptimal performance; taking one step too many creates drag that compounds down the track. "If you push the sled one step too far, you get in the sled and you’re actually pulling back, creating a braking force which kills your run," explains Aron McGuire, CEO of USABS. Through Snowflake CoWork, the team can now calculate the exact number of steps required for an optimal launch.

Data Overrides Visual Cues

Even seasoned athletes can be misled by what they see. Elana Meyers Taylor, a five-time Olympian, found that data analysis revealed crucial curves on the track that visually appeared less significant. "Once we ran the data with Snowflake CoWork, we realized there were certain curves you didn't need to focus on at all. The ones that mattered happened to be curves 1, 2 and 4," she stated. This focused approach allows athletes to direct their mental and physical energy more effectively.

This precision extends to coaching. Head Coach Chris Fogt noted that data has refined long-held coaching techniques. "He's been teaching the same curve the exact same way for a long time. Now we have the data, and we've found a couple of times he wasn't necessarily wrong, but maybe he was off by just a hair." The integration of data with decades of experience amplifies coaching expertise.

The partnership’s ambitions extend beyond the current competition cycle.

Recruiting is a key future focus. With athletes often transitioning from sports like track and field or football, identifying raw talent requires sophisticated analysis. Snowflake CoWork aims to streamline this process, allowing USABS to pinpoint athletes with the specific physical attributes needed for bobsled. This move signifies a strategic shift towards data-informed talent acquisition.

Furthermore, the team plans to leverage AI for optimizing equipment selection based on ice conditions, humidity, and other variables. This aims to remove guesswork, enabling greater confidence entering races. The insights gained from USABS's use of data collaboration are compounding, laying the groundwork for future success in upcoming games.
