OpenAI Launches AI Economic Research Program

OpenAI has announced the launch of its new OpenAI Economic Research Exchange, a program designed to foster rigorous external research into the economic ramifications of artificial intelligence. The initiative aims to move beyond anecdotal evidence by supporting empirical studies grounded in real-world data.

The Exchange will facilitate structured, project-based collaborations between selected researchers and OpenAI's Economic Research division. The goal is to generate credible, independent insights into how AI is transforming workers, businesses, and the broader economy, addressing crucial questions surrounding the economic impacts of AI.

Proposals are sought for research that leverages carefully governed, privacy-protected use of OpenAI tools and datasets. This approach aims to enable research that traditional datasets alone cannot support, while maintaining strict user privacy and responsible data handling.

Selected projects will undergo defined milestones, data governance protocols, and review processes. OpenAI is particularly interested in researchers with expertise in applied causal inference, labor economics, productivity, and related fields, welcoming applications that could expand the evidence base for AI research funding.

This initiative builds upon OpenAI's existing efforts, such as OpenAI Signals, to improve the measurement of AI's economic footprint. The Exchange seeks to provide a comprehensive portfolio of external research collaborations to guide policymakers, businesses, and the public through rapid technological shifts, aligning with broader trends in enterprise AI.

Proposals will be evaluated on methodological rigor, feasibility, alignment with Exchange priorities, and the potential for impactful contributions. Applications are currently open and will close on July 5, 2026, with notifications for selected researchers expected by July 31, 2026.
