The burgeoning artificial intelligence revolution, while promising unprecedented innovation, presents a formidable challenge: its immense energy appetite. Toby Rice, CEO of EQT, America's largest natural gas producer, recently discussed this critical nexus on CNBC's 'Money Movers,' highlighting how natural gas is uniquely positioned to fuel the AI boom. Rice spoke with the CNBC anchors about natural gas prices, the escalating energy demands of data centers, and the profound impact of AI on both business and national security.
Rice immediately framed the AI-driven energy surge as a "major league opportunity" for the natural gas sector. He detailed EQT's strategic transformation over the past five years, repositioning the company as "America's large-scale integrated natural gas champion" prepared to meet this unprecedented demand. This proactive shift has enabled EQT to secure significant supply deals with power plants dedicated to feeding AI data centers.
EQT's recent announcements underscore this commitment, including over 1.5 billion cubic feet per day (BCF/d) of natural gas supply deals, with a new 600-megawatt power plant in West Virginia alone. To put this in perspective, Rice stated, "This is an amount of natural gas that will be able to produce more than New York City." The scale of energy required by future AI infrastructure is truly staggering.
The CEO anticipates a dramatic increase in natural gas demand for AI, projecting a rise of "between 10 to 18 BCF a day of natural gas," translating to a 10% to almost 20% increase in overall natural gas demand. This forecast positions natural gas not merely as a transitional fuel, but as a foundational energy source for the AI era. EQT's robust growth pipeline suggests more such deals are on the horizon.
Beyond the economic upside, Rice emphasized the critical national security implications of this energy supply. He asserted that winning the global AI race necessitates a reliable, domestic energy foundation. "This isn't just one of the biggest economic opportunities to the United States... it's also incredibly important from a national security perspective," Rice explained. He concluded with a clear mandate: "We've got to unleash American energy and give our tech customers the ability to run full throttle." EQT, he assured, is "set to deliver."
