Databricks has launched a new connector for Google Sheets, aiming to bring real-time, governed data directly from its Lakehouse platform into the widely-used spreadsheet application. This move seeks to democratize access to enterprise data for business users who rely on tools like Google Sheets for planning, analysis, and reporting. The Databricks Google Sheets connector is built on Databricks SQL and leverages Unity Catalog for governance, ensuring data integrity and security.
Traditionally, connecting governed data to spreadsheets involved manual CSV exports or outdated snapshots, leading to data silos and inconsistent metrics. This new integration eliminates that friction, allowing users to query live data directly within Sheets. This capability is crucial as organizations increasingly rely on accurate, governed data in spreadsheets, a trend highlighted by advancements that bring governed data in spreadsheets to new levels.
Seamless Data Access and Governance
The connector provides a no-code graphical interface for users to pull data, alongside SQL query capabilities. Permissions are managed automatically via Unity Catalog, maintaining robust governance. Users can also schedule automatic data refreshes or update data manually, ensuring that analyses are always based on the most current information. This approach empowers business users while enabling data leaders to uphold governance standards, a critical aspect of modern analytics where AI overhauls business analytics tools.
Nubank, a digital banking leader, is already utilizing the integration. Henrique Lopes, Data Products Director at Nubank, stated, "This connector has unblocked core working processes by allowing our non-technical users to perform data exploration within a familiar interface." This underscores the value of meeting teams where they work with trusted data.
The Databricks connector for Google Sheets is now generally available. Users can find it in the Google Marketplace and access it via the Extensions menu in Google Sheets.
