German AI firm Black Forest Labs closed a $300 million Series B funding round, establishing a post-money valuation of $3.25 billion.
Salesforce Ventures and Anjney Midha (AMP) co-led the investment, drawing participation from established firms including a16z, NVIDIA, and General Catalyst.
The company intends to direct the new capital toward expanding its core research and development capabilities in foundational AI models. This funding validates the rapid commercial traction Black Forest Labs has achieved since its August 2024 inception, particularly in generative imaging technology. Black Forest Labs specializes in creating and refining large-scale models for image synthesis and modification, which are increasingly integrated across the creative software ecosystem. Its models are already utilized by prominent platforms such as Adobe, Picsart, and Vercel, indicating deep integration into professional workflows.
The firm recently disclosed Flux 2, the newest iteration of its image generation engine, which reportedly enhances text coherence and style fidelity using up to ten reference images simultaneously. Furthermore, Flux 2 is capable of producing imagery at resolutions reaching 4K pixels, pushing the boundaries of current open-source capabilities. The founding team comprises former researchers instrumental in developing Stability AI’s foundational Stable Diffusion models, providing them with deep domain expertise in this rapidly evolving sector. This background positions them directly against established generative AI players.
The generative imaging market remains highly competitive, populated by entities like Midjourney and OpenAI, which continue to advance their proprietary models rapidly. Investor interest in this specific vertical remains high, evidenced by recent large investments in comparable generative technology companies.
The announced valuation places Black Forest Labs firmly among the leading privately held European AI labs currently attracting global investment capital.
This capital influx suggests a sustained belief in the commercial viability of their diffusion-based approach over competing architectures.
Consequently, Black Forest Labs is positioned to accelerate its timeline for deploying next-generation multimodal AI tools, potentially challenging existing incumbents in both enterprise licensing and direct application usage.
Their focus remains squarely on advancing model fidelity and efficiency.
