French AI startup Mistral has secured $830 million in debt financing, its first such round, to acquire Nvidia chips for its new data centers. This significant funding, provided by a consortium of seven banks including Bpifrance and BNP Paribas, will enable the company to scale its infrastructure and compete in the global AI race. Mistral aims to offer an open-source, sovereign AI alternative to proprietary models from US rivals.
