Kai-Fu Lee, a prominent figure in the AI world and CEO of 01.AI, shared his insights on the rapidly evolving AI landscape, the impact of new models like Kimi K3, and his company's strategic pivot towards application development. Speaking at the World AI Conference in Shanghai, Lee expressed optimism about the continuous improvement of AI models, noting that they have surpassed human intelligence and should be applied to more complex tasks.

AI Model Advancements and Open Source Momentum

Lee lauded the latest Kimi K3 model, stating that 01.AI has tested it and found it to be "excellent." He confirmed that the company plans to integrate it into their products. Lee observed a clear trend of AI models becoming increasingly sophisticated, with no apparent end in sight. He also highlighted the growing competitiveness of open-source models, which are gradually closing the gap with their closed-source counterparts. This development is particularly significant for enterprises that prioritize on-premise deployment to protect sensitive data, a key advantage of open-source solutions.

01.AI's Strategic Shift to Applications

Addressing the relationship between 01.AI's foundational "e-series" models and external models like Kimi K3, Lee clarified that the company's focus has shifted to building applications. "We think we want to focus our energies on building applications," Lee stated. He elaborated that with the increasing quality of available AI models, 01.AI's strategy is to build on the "very, very best model" and leverage their intelligence to transform companies' financial statements.

Lee introduced 01.AI's flagship product, Boss AI, designed to offer CEOs a comprehensive "god's eye view" of company data to facilitate better decision-making and improve financial performance. He emphasized that AI models are now "smarter than all humans," making their application to simple tasks a "pity." This strategic pivot, undertaken about a year ago, has led to a significant drop in expenses for 01.AI, bringing the company closer to profitability.

Path to Profitability and Global Expansion

Lee expressed confidence in achieving profitability soon, projecting it for sometime next year. He reported that 01.AI's bookings have increased "three to four times from last year," necessitating increased hiring to meet demand. The company's Boss AI product, he explained, resonates with CEOs looking for tangible AI transformation, offering insights, risk identification, and improved profitability, unlike "sugar coated demonstrations" often seen in the market. Lee himself uses the product daily, crediting it for guiding his sales strategy.

The demand for 01.AI's services extends globally, with clients in Asia, South America, and the Middle East. The primary challenge for the company, according to Lee, is the ability to hire qualified English, Arabic, and other language-speaking consultants and employees. Despite this, he foresees "hundreds of percent of growth for the coming years," while clarifying that 01.AI is not a "token factory" aiming for exponential growth.

AI Development Race: US vs. China

Discussing the global AI race, Lee noted that while the US might generate more revenue from AI models, China is expected to capture a larger market share due to the strength of open-source distribution and on-premise deployment. He predicted that China's large tech companies like Tencent and ByteDance would likely lead in developing creative AI applications for consumers, while acknowledging the US's lead in hardware. Lee also commented on the global GPU shortage, stating that US export controls have been an "imaginative but unsuccessful effort to contain China" and have failed to curb its AI advancements.

IPO Plans and Competitive Landscape

Looking ahead, Lee confirmed that 01.AI is aiming for a Hong Kong IPO in 2027, stating that while the financial numbers are ready, the process needs to be completed. He also addressed the competitive landscape, positioning 01.AI alongside Palantir as one of the few companies capable of delivering AI transformation results within a short timeframe. Lee expressed respect for Palantir's pioneering role but highlighted a key differentiator: Palantir's focus on defense and military applications, which 01.AI avoids. Furthermore, he noted that Palantir's strategic focus on US allies means less direct competition in the markets where 01.AI primarily operates.

Regarding the perception of China's AI development phase, Lee acknowledged concerns about price competition but remained optimistic. He pointed to strong government support, consumer and enterprise enthusiasm for AI in China, and a generally positive public perception compared to the US. While acknowledging potential challenges in enterprise willingness to pay, Lee expressed confidence in China's ability to secure an "unassailable position of at least number two in AI and possibly number one in many of the key areas."
