Bugbot, the AI-powered code review tool from Cursor, is shifting its pricing structure. The company announced it will move away from a $40 per seat per month subscription model to a usage-based billing system for both its Teams and Individual plans. This marks a significant change in how developers will pay for automated code review services, mirroring trends seen in other AI development tools, similar to how Copilot Shifts to Usage Billing.

For existing Bugbot customers, this transition will begin at their next billing renewal date after June 5th, 2026. Those on annual plans purchased before this date will see the new pricing take effect in May 2027.

The core of the new model, as detailed on the Cursor Blog, eliminates seat fees entirely. Instead, Bugbot will bill based on actual usage. For Teams, this means billing will be tied to on-demand spend, while Individual plans will draw from included usage quotas. The company estimates an average Bugbot run costs between $1.00 and $1.50, varying with the size and complexity of the pull request.

Customizable Review Effort

A key feature of the new usage-based billing is the introduction of configurable 'effort levels' for Bugbot's reviews. Users can now adjust how deeply Bugbot analyzes code, allowing for more thorough, longer-running reviews or custom logic for dynamic effort determination. The default setting maintains Bugbot's current performance, which identifies bugs that are resolved 80% of the time by merge. Internal testing suggests that a 'high effort' setting can uncover 35% more bugs without impacting the resolution rate.
