Leil has raised €1.5 million to commercialize its data storage software. The company helps enterprises use high-density hard drives more effectively. The seed round was led by Karma Ventures with participation from Specialist VC.
Leil develops software for Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) hard drives. This technology is common in large-scale data centers but has been difficult for other companies to adopt. SMR drives overlap data tracks on a disk like shingles on a roof. This physical design increases storage capacity by approximately 20 percent per disk. This density creates a challenge. Data must be written sequentially to avoid corruption, which requires complex software management. Leil’s software automates this process for enterprise use. It orchestrates how data is written, moved, and recovered across thousands of drives. The system also identifies and powers down inactive drives. This can reduce energy consumption by up to 70 percent for archive-heavy workloads. Leil will use the new funding to accelerate its go-to-market strategy.
The company also plans to expand its product roadmap and grow its commercial team.
