132 universities across 18 countries now get a year of free AWS Kiro with 1,000 credits a month, no credit card required.
AWS piloted the program in March 2026 with 11 universities in two countries. It is now scaling 12x, expanding beyond North America to Asia Pacific, Europe and Latin America.
Students get the same agent used by teams at Mondelēz International, Siemens and Amazon, plus the zero-install Kiro Web and current models. Thousands in the pilot already shipped apps, including an accessibility app for visually impaired users and a voice-activated wellness platform.
How the AWS Kiro spec-driven build actually works
It is not chat and paste. Students collaborate with Kiro to define requirements, design choices and implementation steps before any code is generated.
Think blueprint before contractor. The spec is the blueprint, Kiro does repetitive execution, students check gaps and verify output matches the spec.
