How Southern Company SCOUT actually works

SCOUT queries a dedicated Databricks Lakehouse warehouse every minute and surfaces active outages, customer impact, ETRs, maps, driving directions and damage assessments in one mobile view.

It layers terrain intelligence for each ticket, flagging rear-lot access, mountainous routes and equipment constraints so dispatchers send climbing crews or bucket trucks correctly the first time.

Think of it as air traffic control merging radar, weather and runway assignments on one screen instead of three separate radios.

Why this matters and what is not fixed

SCOUT moved the richest operational picture off the DCC desk to field and storm centers at Georgia Power, Alabama Power, Mississippi Power and Southern LINC, with more than 250 users on a single peak day in June.

The foundation is Delta Lake for storage plus Unity Catalog governance, which let the team locate every car wash customer, its transformer and related infrastructure in about two hours without stitching systems.

What is not fixed is autonomy, Southern Company is keeping dispatchers in control while evaluating AI recommendations tied to location, travel time, skills and fatigue, and its Skydio drone patrol concept has no deployment date and would need real-time video analytics before crews can trust it.

The real test is whether that unified data cuts ticket assignment and restoration time when the next major Southeast hurricane hits.
