OpenAI's latest research reveals that artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping job functions, allowing individuals to perform tasks previously outside their defined roles. This shift, detailed in their new Work at the Frontier series, indicates a significant redefinition of work itself.

Analysis of over 800,000 U.S. ChatGPT messages shows that 16.8% of work-related messages and a striking 43.5% of occupation-specific messages involve tasks typically belonging to another profession. This phenomenon, dubbed "task crossover," means a small business owner might draft copy, review contracts, or conduct financial analysis independently, while a salesperson could explore customer data, and a marketer could troubleshoot website issues without developer intervention.

Task Crossover Takes Center Stage

The data challenges traditional views of AI's impact, which often focus on AI performing existing tasks. Instead, OpenAI's findings suggest AI is changing who performs tasks. This is the first report in the Work at the Frontier series, offering a real-time, data-driven look at evolving job roles.

When generic tasks like writing and summarizing are excluded, 43.5% of remaining occupation-specific messages involve tasks outside the user's role. This suggests a substantial portion of AI use is dedicated to role expansion.

Certain professions show particularly high rates of task crossover. Customer experience workers (77%), designers (75%), human resources (69%), legal (56%), and marketers (53%) are heavily engaging in tasks from other domains.

Marketing and Engineering Tasks Travel Far

Marketing and engineering tasks are frequently adopted by workers in unrelated fields. Marketing materials creation appears in five other occupational groups, while financial calculations and tech troubleshooting are common outside tasks across nearly all analyzed professions.

Designers, for instance, heavily integrate external tasks (35.2% of their messages), yet design-specific tasks rarely appear in other roles (1.7%). Conversely, engineering tasks are a significant source of external work for others (7.4%) even as engineers themselves use fewer external tasks (18.5%). Marketing shows dual crossover, with marketers using external tasks (24.3%) and their own tasks spreading widely (8.9%).

Small Businesses Lead the Crossover Charge

Business size significantly influences AI adoption patterns. Smaller organizations (2-5 seats) exhibit higher outside-occupation task shares (18.9%) compared to larger ones (over 100 seats, 16.3%).

This suggests AI serves as a powerful generalist tool, especially where specialized resources are scarce.

These usage patterns offer an early signal of occupational change, preceding formal updates to job descriptions and titles, providing critical insights into the future of AI and job roles.
