THE ROLE

As the Lead System Safety & Environmental Engineer, you will own program safety, hazard management, and environmental compliance for the Anthem Low-Cost Munition. You will serve as Covenant's primary system safety authority, working closely with Engineering, Test, Quality, and Program leadership while interfacing directly with U.S. Government customers and external test organizations.

You will lead the development and execution of the System Safety Program, manage the enterprise Hazard Tracking System, and oversee safety-related testing and analysis across the program. This role combines technical system safety expertise with hands-on test coordination, data analysis, technical documentation, and customer engagement. You will be responsible for ensuring safety requirements are understood, hazards are continuously tracked and mitigated, and final test plans and reports meet the expectations of our Government customers.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Own and execute the System Safety Program for the Anthem weapon system.
  • Develop and maintain the System Safety Program Plan (SSPP), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), and Safety Assessment Report (SAR).
  • Apply MIL-STD-882E and AMCOM Regulation 385-17 throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Maintain continuous hazard identification, analysis, tracking, mitigation, and closure across the program.
  • Manage Covenant's enterprise Hazard Tracking System (HTS) and ensure hazards, controls, and verification activities remain current.
  • Conduct software safety analysis in partnership with embedded and flight software engineering teams.
  • Map software safety risks and mitigations to flight-control firmware and system-level hazards.
  • Support Government Software System Safety Technical Review Panel (SSSTRP) and System Safety Working Group (SSWG) activities.
  • Serve as the primary safety interface with Army, Navy, and other Government customers.
  • Coordinate safety-related testing with external ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratories and test facilities.
  • Develop and review test plans, procedures, data packages, and final test reports for Government submission.
  • Interpret raw test data, including high-speed diagnostics, blast overpressure measurements, thermocouple data, and other environmental test results.
  • Support the preparation and execution of live-warhead testing for hazard assessment and system safety qualification.
  • Oversee testing associated with Insensitive Munitions requirements, including Basic Safety, Fast Heating, and Sympathetic Reaction testing.
  • Lead planning and coordination for Electromagnetic Hazards testing, including Hazardous Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordnance (HERO) and Personnel-borne Electrostatic Discharge (PESD).
  • Synthesize test results into formal technical reports and safety assessments for delivery to Government customers.
  • Evaluate environmental impacts associated with the program and manufacturing processes.
  • Develop and maintain environmental compliance documentation, including Pollution Prevention Plans, Hazardous Waste Reports, and Hazardous Materials Management Program Plans (HMMP).
  • Ensure product design and manufacturing processes comply with applicable environmental requirements, including the elimination of Class 1 Ozone Depleting Chemicals (ODCs).
  • Partner with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Test teams to identify safety and environmental risks early in the product lifecycle.
  • Stay current on applicable DoD, NATO, environmental, and industry standards and incorporate changes into program requirements and processes.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, Safety Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 7+ years of experience in system safety, weapons safety, aerospace, defense, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Proven experience executing System Safety programs in accordance with MIL-STD-882E.
  • Experience applying AMCOM Regulation 385-17 or equivalent U.S. DoD system safety requirements.
  • Experience developing safety artifacts including SSPPs, FHAs, hazard analyses, safety assessments, and SARs.
  • Experience with hazard identification, risk assessment, mitigation, verification, and hazard tracking.
  • Experience supporting safety testing and interpreting technical test data.
  • Strong technical writing skills with the ability to produce clear, rigorous engineering documentation for Government customers.
  • Experience working directly with Government customers, test organizations, or external engineering partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple technical workstreams and drive safety requirements to completion.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to work effectively across Engineering, Test, Quality, and Program teams.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. SECRET security clearance.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with MIL-STD-2105E and Insensitive Munitions (IM) testing.
  • Experience with MIL-STD-464D and electromagnetic environmental effects testing.
  • Experience coordinating HERO and PESD testing in an anechoic chamber or similar test environment.
  • Experience analyzing blast overpressure, thermal, high-speed diagnostic, or other live-fire test data.
  • Experience with software system safety and flight-control firmware.
  • Experience supporting live-warhead testing or munition hazard assessments.
  • Working knowledge of NATO standardization agreements, including:
  • STANAG 4697 / AOP-52 — System & Software Safety Management
  • STANAG 4439 / AOP-39 — Insensitive Munitions
  • STANAG 4370 / AECTP-500 — Electrical and Electromagnetic Environmental Testing
  • Experience working with ISO/IEC 17025-accredited test laboratories.
  • Experience developing environmental compliance programs for defense or aerospace manufacturing.
  • Experience with hazardous materials, hazardous waste, pollution prevention, and Ozone Depleting Substance requirements.
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, Safety Engineering, or a related discipline.
