AWS Saudi Arabia region 2026 set for December

AWS will launch its first AWS Saudi Arabia region 2026 in December 2026, backed by a $5.3 billion investment and a 50MW AI Zone with HUMAIN by 2028.

The announcement at LEAP in Riyadh locks in a sovereign-by-design region that keeps Saudi workloads and AI training inside the Kingdom.

It fulfills a commitment first made in March 2024 that will expand AWS Global Infrastructure to 40 Regions worldwide.

How the new region works

The Region gives developers, startups and enterprises local data centers to run applications and serve end users without exporting data for residency or latency.

All Regions are sovereign-by-design under the AWS Digital Sovereignty Pledge, which isolates control planes and data the way a bank vault keeps the key inside the building instead of mailing it abroad.

The AI Zone adds AWS Trainium chips and NVIDIA infrastructure for training and inference, with HUMAIN as preferred AI partner, HUMAIN's ALLAM Arabic large language model via Amazon Bedrock, and HUMAIN Fabric via AWS Marketplace.

Why it matters and what is still unclear

For builders this removes the cross-border dilemma that has blocked regulated workloads in finance, government and telecom from using global cloud regions.

Early adopters named include Abdul Latif Jameel, Almosafer, stc Group and Red Bull Mobile, with ZainTECH, Accenture and Tamkeen as partners and stc Group announcing a separate cloud and AI collaboration.

The gap is timing and scale. The Region is not live until December 2026 and the AI Zone caps at up to 50MW by 2028, while an IDC report commissioned by AWS pegs AI's contribution to Saudi GDP at $130 billion by 2030.

AWS pairs infrastructure with workforce programs including the Amazon Academy with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to train over 100,000 citizens, partnerships with 11 universities, a Women's Skills Initiative for up to 10,000 women, and two new innovation centers. More than 680,000 people have already been reached toward a two million target across the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey by 2030.

Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, said the new Region and HUMAIN partnership will deliver full-stack cloud and AI to power new industries and Vision 2030 goals.

His Excellency Engineer Abdullah Alswaha, Saudi Minister of Communications and Information Technology, said the build strengthens the Kingdom's position as a global computing partner for the Intelligence Age.

Sovereign-by-design reduces remote data exposure but does not replace customer-side encryption, key management and application hardening that builders must still implement.

Until the December 2026 launch, Saudi scale still depends on overseas Regions and the HUMAIN joint delivery must prove it can secure scarce Trainium and NVIDIA supply on schedule.
