How the Tesla Cybercab Austin system actually works

Think elevator, not car. No steering wheel, no pedals, no rearview mirrors, just butterfly doors and a minimalist cabin.

The vehicle is designed from the ground up for full autonomy on Tesla self-driving software. It runs on cameras alone, without lidar.

That design removes parts. One panel noted a typical drivetrain has around 2,000 moving parts versus about 17 in a Tesla, which cuts cost and maintenance.

Whoever mass manufactures fastest wins. For builders that means mobility cost trends toward the cost of electricity and cleaning, not driver labor.

What is not fixed is city-by-city approval and real-world edge cases. Expect court battles over camera-only versus lidar, weather, and where human drivers are banned.

Security surface also changes. Fewer mechanical parts does not mean fewer digital ones, and autonomy at scale needs quiet cooling, logged operation, and clear incident response.

Nevada has already approved 5,000 vehicles in Las Vegas within 12 months. Austin is the test of whether that scale proves out or stalls on safety scrutiny.

The invite to buy ten and let them earn for you is classic Tesla vertical integration. If cities create no-human-driver zones, transport flips from owned asset to dispatched service overnight.
