OpenAI is stepping up its involvement with the U.S. government's scientific endeavors, announcing a significant commitment to the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission. This initiative seeks to leverage advanced artificial intelligence to propel American scientific leadership into a new era.

The Genesis Mission aims to integrate AI with federal scientific data, advanced computing, and experimental facilities to double research productivity within a decade. OpenAI's participation will focus on providing researchers with access to its most advanced AI capabilities. This includes $4 million in Codex access for approximately 2,000 researchers and $3 million in API support for large-scale scientific campaigns. These resources are intended to accelerate the pace of discovery and help tackle complex, previously intractable problems.

AI as National Scientific Infrastructure

OpenAI views its role as transforming AI from a mere tool into essential national scientific infrastructure. This involves pairing frontier models with the unique tools, workflows, and expertise found within national laboratories and universities.

The company will offer participating researchers up to $10 million in API usage, effectively matching $2.5 million in researcher spending. Specialized resources, such as GPT‑Rosalind for bioscience projects and advanced cyber capabilities for cybersecurity researchers, will also be made available to select national laboratory personnel. Trusted national laboratory leaders will receive early access to new models and features to prepare for their integration.

This commitment builds on prior collaborations, including an AI Jam Session with nine National Laboratories and the deployment of advanced reasoning models on the Venado supercomputer. Evaluations of multimodal AI systems in realistic lab settings are also underway, exploring both the opportunities and risks of integrating AI into scientific work.

Targeted Scientific Campaigns

As part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, OpenAI will support specific research areas.

Two initial large-scale campaigns are planned: one targeting breakthroughs in high-temperature superconductors, combining AI, simulation, and experimental data. The second, "An Atlas of the Machine-Accessible Frontier," will map where AI can currently support scientific advances using existing knowledge.

This collaborative effort underscores a long-term vision where industry provides frontier capabilities, government coordinates priorities, and researchers remain central to defining and validating scientific progress, potentially renewing the U.S. model of translating scientific leadership into national power.
