Skeptic check: no accuracy rates, no per-return price, and no security attestations were disclosed.

Black Ore launched Black Ore for Small Firms at Intuit Connect in Las Vegas, bringing its Tax Autopilot, an autonomous preparation engine that turns source documents into a review-ready return, to practices that have not had enterprise automation before. The company said the system takes in documents in any format, prepares the return, links every figure to its source and flags items needing attention, with a firm professional as final sign-off. It is delivered natively into Intuit ProConnect Tax and Intuit Lacerte, so use requires authenticated access inside the firm's own tax system, not a remote, unauthenticated attack surface.

That native fit is the change.

Until now Black Ore said its automation ran in production for three tax seasons at the largest firms in the country. Now it is selling the same workflow without an enterprise contract and without a five-figure minimum, priced per return. The company said firms can be live in less than a day and each gets a named Black Ore specialist, and that its small and mid-sized firm customer base has grown more than fivefold since the start of 2026, as of the October 27 announcement.

What it is, in steps, is straightforward to describe and hard to get right. Tax Autopilot ingests W-2s, 1099s, K-1s and prior returns whether they arrive as PDFs, scans or photos, maps them to the right forms and populates ProConnect Tax or Lacerte directly so staff do not rekey. The firm then reviews a draft where every number traces back to the document it came from. The hard parts are the exceptions, messy images, mismatched names, amended documents and state quirks, where a missed flag becomes a filing error and where the liability still sits with the preparer.

That is where the announcement leaves gaps. Black Ore did not disclose accuracy rates, error rates versus human preparation, or how review flags are tuned, and it did not publish the actual per-return price that determines whether a 20-person firm can actually take on more clients without adding headcount. It also did not detail security and data handling for a system that by design holds highly sensitive personal data, such as encryption, retention, access controls or SOC 2 status. For a product that touches source documents and writes directly into the system of record, those are not footnotes.

The talent context is real, and Black Ore is pointing at it. Most small firms cannot hire their way out of the shortage, and the company argues per-return automation lets a 20-person shop add capacity. Eyal Shinar, co-founder and chief executive of Black Ore, said the offering levels the playing field by putting automation into the software smaller firms already use. Sean McLean, chief digital officer at Elevate, a platform supporting independent accounting firms, said setup took a phone call and that preparers are getting back 8 to 15 hours a week. Intuit Connect itself, where the launch was staged, runs October 26 through 28 in Las Vegas this year, per the Insightful Accountant preview of the event.

Watch the terms before you trust the time savings. Ask for a live run on your own messy returns, the price at your volume, who holds the data and for how long, and what the firm keeps as evidence that each figure links to source. If Black Ore can show those pieces, the per-return model could matter for small firms. If not, it is another demo that looks clean until April gets close.
