UN Taps AI Leaders for New Global Commission

Ren Ito, co-founder and chairman of Sakana AI, has been appointed as a founding member of the newly established AI for Good Global Commission. This initiative operates under the UN’s AI for Good platform, managed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The high-level commission comprises roughly 40 global leaders from government, industry, and international organizations. It is co-chaired by Salesforce's Marc Benioff. Other notable members include Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, and Albert Bourla, Chair and CEO of Pfizer.

The commission will focus on international discussions around AI trustworthiness, governance, and societal integration. Ito's appointment signals a move to integrate practical AI development insights into global policy conversations.

Guiding AI's Future

Sakana AI aims to contribute to forming a trusted AI ecosystem through active participation in the commission's work. The inaugural meeting is set for July 8th in Geneva.

The AI for Good platform, established by the ITU in 2017, seeks to identify AI applications that contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. This new commission aims to address critical technical, socio-economic, and policy challenges related to AI.

Its objectives include strengthening trust in AI, fostering responsible innovation, and ensuring broad economic and social benefits for people worldwide.
