Studio Atelico, a game studio founded by industry veterans from companies including Uber, Meta, SEGA, and Creative Assembly, has successfully raised $5 million in seed funding to develop AI-powered gaming experiences. The round was led by Air Street Capital, with participation from notable angel investors including Chris Ré from Factory, Thomas Wolf from Hugging Face, and Alex Ratner from Snorkel.
The San Francisco and London-based company is focused on creating what they term "AI-first" games that utilize generative artificial intelligence to enable new types of gameplay experiences. CEO and Co-Founder Piero Molino emphasized that while the company embraces AI technology, they maintain that great games are fundamentally created by people for people, with AI serving to enhance rather than replace human creativity.
The funding will support three primary objectives for Studio Atelico. First, the company plans to release games that demonstrate their proprietary AI technology and showcase innovative gameplay possibilities. Second, they will accelerate development of the Atelico Engine, which is designed to provide other game developers with accessible AI tools without requiring significant financial investment. Third, the studio is committed to maintaining what they describe as a "pro-artist ethos" by developing partnerships with studios and artists who share their vision of fair AI implementation in gaming.
Nathan Benaich, General Partner of Air Street Capital and author of the State of AI Report, led the investment round and noted that AI-first technology has the potential to enable entirely new gameplay experiences. He highlighted the team's combination of advanced AI expertise and proven game design experience as particularly valuable for creating novel gaming experiences.
In conjunction with the funding announcement, Studio Atelico has brought on Chris Olson, a gaming and technology industry veteran who previously led SEGA's growth in mobile gaming. Olson will focus on driving game development and marketing efforts as the studio expands its operations.
The company's technological approach centers on integrating AI into core game mechanics to create what they describe as "uniquely immersive experiences." Their system includes NPCs with sophisticated intelligence that can remember player actions and learn over time, real-time procedural generation of environments and game rules that adapt to individual players, and new interaction systems featuring mechanics like negotiation and persuasion. Additionally, their technology supports emergent quest creation, where AI agents generate missions based on evolving world states and player choices, as well as emotion-driven group behaviors where NPC moods can spread and influence gameplay dynamics.
Studio Atelico positions itself as supporting both player imagination and developer vision while offering cost-effective access to AI technology for game development. The company has indicated that their first game release is planned for the near future, though specific timing has not been disclosed.
