Snowflake is removing a major roadblock for enterprises looking to ditch Teradata. The company announced the public preview of Datometry for Snowflake, a tool designed to accelerate migration from Teradata to its AI Data Cloud.
For years, Teradata customers faced a stark choice: renew expensive, multi-year contracts or undertake risky, time-consuming application rewrites. Datometry for Snowflake aims to eliminate this tradeoff by enabling a near-direct transition.
The core of the solution lies in virtualizing Teradata SQL behavior on Snowflake. This allows existing applications to connect to Snowflake as if it were still Teradata, requiring little to no SQL modification.
This approach facilitates a three-step process: repoint applications to Snowflake via Datometry, test workloads in the new environment, and then transition to production with minimal disruption.
This offers immediate escape velocity from legacy infrastructure. Companies can avoid costly Teradata renewals and begin leveraging Snowflake's capabilities sooner.
Modernization can then be tackled incrementally. By decoupling the migration from immediate code transformation, businesses can adopt Snowflake's native features on their own schedule.
This strategy also integrates with tools like SnowConvert AI, allowing for a phased conversion of legacy code to native Snowflake SQL over time. The goal is to reduce migration risk and prevent downtime for mission-critical operations.
The public preview is now available. Interested parties should contact their Snowflake representative for eligibility and configuration details.
