Rep. McCormick: AI Data Centers and US Debt Concerns

Representative Rich McCormick (R-Georgia) recently shared his perspectives on the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure and the pressing issue of the U.S. national debt. Speaking on the 'Politics This Weekend' program, McCormick underscored the strategic imperative for the United States to maintain its leadership in artificial intelligence, advocating for continued, robust development of data centers.

The National Debt: A "Massive Problem"

McCormick voiced significant alarm regarding the escalating U.S. national debt, stating, "I'm very concerned that when we actually talk about what our future is for Americans, for our children, when they're paying $2 trillion in debt servicing, which is coming quickly by the way in the next 10 years." He highlighted that the national debt has doubled in the past decade, from approximately $20 trillion to $40 trillion, leading to a downgrade of the U.S. currency and rising interest rates. He warned that this trend could hamstring the nation's borrowing capacity and potentially impact its status as the industry standard for currency.

The Congressman also critiqued the political approach to fiscal responsibility, suggesting that the current system allows for excessive spending. He argued that the filibuster, while valuable for other legislation, should not impede budget decisions. "For the budget, it's our only constitutional responsibility. It doesn't matter if the Republicans or the Democrats are in charge. Whenever you have a filibuster, it just adds pork," McCormick stated, proposing its removal for budget matters as a straightforward way to reduce deficit spending.

Advocating for AI Data Centers

Shifting to the topic of artificial intelligence, McCormick addressed the growing debate around the construction of data centers. Having recently toured several, including one at Nvidia, he acknowledged community concerns but pushed back against what he described as "alarmism." He noted instances where protests against data center construction seemed disproportionate to local populations, suggesting that external influence, possibly from adversaries like China, might be at play. "What is the concerted effort? Why aren't people from other communities coming in? I think this is a bit nefarious," he remarked.

McCormick emphasized the broad benefits of AI and data centers, stating they are crucial for advancements in healthcare, energy, and virtually every aspect of life. He countered common criticisms, such as data centers only providing temporary jobs, by noting that construction jobs are inherently temporary. He also addressed environmental concerns, pointing out that modern data centers use closed-loop water systems and clean energy sources like fuel cells, which can even benefit local grids. "All the worries, all the drummed up alarmism is really bad for the future of America," he asserted.

To address local opposition and optimize development, McCormick proposed building data centers on military bases. "My suggestion to the president and to the administration... basically, you're not going to have any protests. You can see you have plenty of land. Fort Gordon is the cyber security headquarters. That's a great place to build. Fort Benning, Fort Hunter, all these places just in Georgia alone," he explained. He believes this approach would not only avoid negative impacts but also be additive by potentially leasing land and reducing base expenditures.

Military Readiness and Alliances

McCormick also touched upon his experience in the Marines and Navy, discussing the importance of military readiness and alliances. Reflecting on U.S. military exercises with South Korea, he expressed hope that any withdrawals are temporary. He praised the South Korean military, noting their shared worldview and commitment to security. "I want to see them go closer to us, not to other countries who are basically invested in communism. That's really good for the stabilization of that area," he said.

He also shared his experiences with the conditions on naval vessels during long deployments, drawing parallels between past hardships and current issues. McCormick recounted instances of equipment failures and challenging living conditions on older ships, noting that such difficulties are not new. He acknowledged the strain on crew members but stressed that necessity often dictates deployment length, a reality understood by most service members.
