OpenAI has secured FedRAMP Moderate authorization for its ChatGPT Enterprise and API Platform, a significant step towards integrating its advanced AI models into U.S. government operations. This compliance ensures federal agencies can leverage frontier AI technologies with the required security, privacy, and governance standards.

The move aims to provide public servants with access to AI capabilities that are already transforming other sectors. Agencies are exploring AI for tasks ranging from expediting permits and drafting communications to advancing scientific research and accelerating software development. This authorization expands the scope of missions that can utilize OpenAI's managed products.

The authorization was achieved through the FedRAMP 20x process, announced in March 2025, which streamlines the path for cloud service providers to demonstrate secure configurations. OpenAI's security and engineering teams collaborated closely with the FedRAMP team to implement KSI, collect evidence, and undergo validation.

FedRAMP Moderate Expands Government Capabilities

Agencies will no longer face a trade-off between cutting-edge AI and secure deployment environments. The FedRAMP 20x Moderate authorization provides a clearer pathway for federal agencies to adopt OpenAI's AI products for internal operations and mission-critical use cases.

Program teams can utilize ChatGPT Enterprise for research acceleration, drafting, translation, and analysis. Technical teams can integrate the OpenAI API into existing systems, build AI copilots, and enhance citizen service workflows.

Agencies will now have access to OpenAI's most powerful models, including GPT‑5.5, within the FedRAMP environment. Future integration will allow access to Codex Cloud via FedRAMP ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces.

For security, privacy, and procurement teams, the authorization offers reusable data for agency review, including the cloud service offering's scope and supporting evidence available on OpenAI’s Trust Portal.
