OpenAI acquires Roi in push for personalized software

OpenAI has acquired Roi, a fintech startup focused on AI-powered personalization, in a deal that will see the small team join the AI giant and shut down its consumer app. The move is less about a foray into finance and more about absorbing a team whose mission evolved into making all software "adaptive, deeply personal companions."

In a blog post announcing the acquisition, the Roi team said that while they started by personalizing financial advice, they "learned something bigger. Personalization isn’t just the future of finance, it’s the future of software itself." The team, including co-founders Sujith, Chip, Joe, and Ajoy, will now join OpenAI to help "lay the foundation for a new generation of software."

As part of the deal, Roi's app will be shut down on October 15, 2025. The company assured users that OpenAI will not have access to any of their financial data, which will be permanently deleted after the shutdown.

The Product-Focused Buying Spree

This acquisition is the latest in a string of strategic deals that reveal OpenAI's aggressive push to transition from a research lab with a hit product to a full-fledged, multi-product tech powerhouse. The company is snapping up talent and technology focused on user experience, data analytics, and product development.

The Roi deal follows the acquisitions of real-time analytics company Rockset and product experimentation platform Statsig, which was a reported $1.1 billion all-stock deal. Earlier this year, OpenAI also acquired the collaborative tool Multi and closed a massive deal with Jony Ive's hardware startup, io. Last year, it bought Global Illumination, a design studio founded by ex-Instagram talent.

Viewed together, the pattern is clear: OpenAI isn't just building more powerful models. It's systematically acquiring the teams and tools needed to build polished, personalized, and data-driven products around them. Roi's expertise in creating "individually tailored insights" is another key piece in that puzzle, signaling a future where OpenAI's tools don't just respond to prompts but actively adapt to their users.
