The move comes as more complex AI models and extended coding tasks increase demand on existing usage allowances. The updated lineup includes Free, Pro, Pro+, and Max tiers, all operating under a usage-based billing model. Code completions and next-edit suggestions will remain unlimited for paid users and will not consume credits.

New Plan Structure

The Free tier will continue to offer a limited number of code completions, chat, and agent interactions per month. Paid plans will now feature a dual credit system: 'Base credits,' directly matching the subscription price, and 'Flex allotments,' providing additional usage that can fluctuate based on evolving AI economics.

The Pro plan, priced at $10/month, will offer $10 in base credits and a $5 flex allotment, totaling $15 in included usage. The Pro+ plan, at $39/month, will provide $39 in base credits and a $31 flex allotment, summing to $70. For demanding users, the new Max plan costs $100/month, offering $100 in base credits and a $100 flex allotment, totaling $200.

Usage beyond the included flex allotment can be purchased separately. GitHub Copilot Pro users will transition to usage-based billing seamlessly.

Flexibility and Future-Proofing

GitHub states the flex allotment is designed to adapt to changes in AI model pricing and efficiency improvements. This approach aims to balance predictable costs with the dynamic nature of AI development.

Existing monthly Pro and Pro+ subscribers will see these changes automatically applied on June 1 without requiring manual adjustments.
