For years, 'ChatGPT' was synonymous with generative AI. That era is rapidly closing. New data from Similarweb reveals a significant market share shift: ChatGPT's global generative AI web traffic has plummeted from approximately 76% a year ago to 53% today. Meanwhile, Google's Gemini has surged past a quarter of all traffic, and Anthropic's Claude has transformed from a minor player into the fastest-growing platform.

This redistribution redefines the landscape for marketers. Optimizing for a single AI platform is no longer sufficient to reach the majority of the audience.

The AI Market Fragmenting

The overall generative AI category is still booming, with average monthly web visits worldwide growing 70% year-over-year to 9.5 billion. Unique visitors increased 57% to 655 million, indicating that existing users are engaging more frequently with these tools.

ChatGPT's share of generative AI website visits dropped over 20 percentage points in twelve months. Gemini is the primary beneficiary, climbing from under 9% to around 27-28% of traffic.

Claude, while still on a smaller base, quadrupled its share to nearly 9%, marking the largest proportional gain. Gemini has absorbed the bulk of ChatGPT's lost traffic, solidifying its position as the biggest winner.

Mobile vs. Web: Divergent Paths

Mobile app data paints a different picture. In the US, Meta AI and Claude saw the sharpest app growth, while Gemini lagged among challengers. ChatGPT defends its app share more effectively than its web presence.

Claude's global app MAU growth is significantly higher than its US growth, suggesting disproportionate international expansion. Meta AI's embedded nature within existing apps fuels its rapid growth, previewing a future of integrated AI assistants.

This shift highlights a move away from standalone AI tools toward passive integration within established platforms. Users are more receptive to AI within familiar environments than adopting entirely new ones.

New Dynamics: Citations and Ads

ChatGPT's homepage-link update in May 2025 has had a lasting impact. Citations within answers have become a dominant referral pattern, with homepage referrals growing significantly faster than total referrals.

Users are increasingly treating brand names within AI answers as endpoints, rather than simply clicking for more information. This changes website traffic from a search-driven model to one resembling the tail end of an ad impression.

While still uncommon, the rate of AI citations is climbing. US ChatGPT prompts cited sources 6.8% of the time in May 2026, up from 1.6% a year prior. Travel and Automotive sectors see the highest citation rates.

Ads have also entered the generative AI space. Approximately 26% of ChatGPT responses now contain an ad, with a third of these appearing in the initial response of a session. Ad impressions persist even in longer, exploratory conversations.

Search Behavior Evolves

Google's AI strategy shows AI Overviews, integrated into standard search, outperforming the dedicated AI Mode. This reinforces the preference for passive AI integration.

Search queries are becoming longer and more conversational, indicating user trust in AI's contextual understanding. This evolution fundamentally alters the concept of 'ranking for a keyword'.

AI chat is no longer a niche habit; it's becoming infrastructure. Growth is now driven by users beyond early adopters, signaling a broader adoption curve.
