Databricks is rolling out a significantly upgraded version of its AI assistant, Databricks Genie, aiming to democratize data insights for business users. The updated platform breaks free from the confines of specific 'Genie Spaces', allowing it to answer questions across a broader data estate.

Previously, Genie operated within curated environments known as Genie Spaces, which provided guardrails for AI interactions. While customers adopted this approach, creating over 1.5 million spaces in 2026 alone, the demand grew for a more integrated experience. The new Genie consolidates these capabilities, enabling it to draw from certified Genie Spaces, governed dashboards, and Databricks Apps from a single chat interface.

This evolution allows Genie to leverage existing business logic and verified metrics without requiring new context layers or extensive model building. The integration of new reasoning models and an agent architecture enhances its ability to tackle complex, open-ended questions, even those spanning multiple data domains.

Connecting to the Enterprise Knowledge Graph

A key advancement is Genie's ability to connect to external enterprise systems. Built-in connectors now allow it to access unstructured data sources such as Google Drive and SharePoint. This integration, managed through the Unity Catalog AI Gateway, extends the context available to Genie, bridging the gap between insights and actionable execution.

A Unified Hub for Business Users

Databricks is consolidating its business user experience under the Genie brand, absorbing the functionalities previously offered by 'Databricks One'. This move aims to create a single, unified entry point for all data and AI interactions, removing the traditional workspace boundaries.

The platform now offers automated identity management, domain-based asset grouping, and custom URLs for streamlined access. This unified approach ensures consistent governance via Unity Catalog and leverages business semantics for trusted metric definitions.

Databricks is making Genie available not just on the web but also through native iOS and Android mobile applications. This ensures that users, from field teams to executives, can access trusted data and AI-powered insights regardless of their location or device.

Getting started involves exploring the new Genie UI documentation and understanding the account-level access model. Databricks account teams can assist with requesting access to the mobile apps.
