OpenAI is bringing its flagship AI directly into Microsoft Excel with the beta launch of ChatGPT for Excel. This new add-in allows users to build, update, and analyze spreadsheet models using natural language prompts, aiming to accelerate workflows for analysts, strategists, and accountants.

The integration is powered by OpenAI's latest model, GPT-5.4, which has been fine-tuned for financial reasoning and complex spreadsheet tasks. This marks a significant step in embedding AI into core business tools, moving beyond standalone chatbots.

AI-powered spreadsheet analysis

Instead of manually crafting formulas or running scenarios, users can describe their needs in plain text. ChatGPT for Excel can then generate or modify live models, perform data analysis, manage budgets, and more, all while preserving existing formulas and structures.

The tool is designed to understand complex workbooks, explain formula logic, trace errors, and show how assumptions propagate through a model. This feature is particularly useful for understanding legacy spreadsheets or verifying complex financial models. OpenAI emphasizes that calculations run natively in Excel, allowing for auditable results.

This advancement in AI in spreadsheet analysis builds on OpenAI's efforts with models like GPT-5.3-Codex, which powers developer tools. The integration aims to reduce manual reconciliation and free up professionals for higher-level decision-making.

Financial data integrations

Alongside the Excel add-in, OpenAI is enhancing ChatGPT with direct integrations for financial data providers. Services like FactSet, Dow Jones Factiva, LSEG, Daloopa, and S&P Global will offer data directly within ChatGPT. This aims to simplify research and analysis for financial workflows, enabling faster generation of reports like earnings summaries and valuation snapshots.

These new capabilities, including support for proprietary data through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), allow finance teams to leverage trusted market, company, and internal data within a single AI interface. This is particularly relevant for tasks like due diligence, underwriting, and investment research, areas where tools like LLM for finance are becoming crucial.

Enterprise-grade security

For business users, ChatGPT Enterprise offers robust security, governance, and control features. These include role-based access control (RBAC), SAML SSO, SCIM, and audit logs, alongside data encryption and enterprise key management. Importantly, data shared within ChatGPT Enterprise is not used for model training by default, addressing key concerns in regulated industries.

The beta version of ChatGPT for Excel is rolling out to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, Pro, and Plus subscribers in the US, Canada, and Australia. OpenAI plans to launch a similar integration for Google Sheets soon.
