AMD Ventures Backs Somite.ai with Strategic Investment to Accelerate Foundation Models for Cell Therapy

Somite.ai, a company developing foundation models for human stem cells, announced on August 20, 2025, that it has received a strategic investment from AMD Ventures. The funding follows Somite’s $47 million Series A round in May, which was led by Khosla Ventures.

The partnership will integrate Somite’s capsule-based data generation platform with AMD’s Instinct GPUs, increasing compute capacity to support the training of Somite’s large-scale foundation models. Somite’s approach aims to reduce the cost of generating stem cell differentiation data to about one-thousandth of traditional methods, enabling broader datasets and more accurate predictive modeling for cell therapy development.

According to Somite, the collaboration with AMD will also include joint work on software optimization for biological data and solutions for next-generation foundation models.

Somite.ai was founded in Boston in 2024 and has raised approximately $60 million to date. Its leadership includes CEO and co-founder Dr. Micha Breakstone, previously co-founder of Chorus.ai, along with researchers from MIT and members of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. The company’s focus is on using AI to accelerate the discovery and optimization of new cell therapies.
