Amazon's shopping assistant has a new name and a loud chart. On StartupHub, Amazon still scores 81, and our Agent Readiness scan from 7 August 2026 grades the public site a D (41 of 100). Alexa for Shopping is a real product. It is also a rebrand of Rufus, and the traffic spike people are hanging on the rename mostly happened while the chatbot still had the old name.

11 new E-commerce companies entered the market in the last 90 days, about 0.9 a week. The 30-day figure (2) is a floor: registry detection lags registration by a couple of weeks.

On 13 May 2026 Amazon said it was folding Rufus into Alexa+ and putting the result in the main search bar, the shopping app, and Echo Show. The company called it "the world's best, most personalized AI assistant for shopping." It is free for signed-in US customers. Prime is not required. Rufus, Amazon says, still runs parts of the experience in the background.
Rajiv Mehta, Amazon's vice president of Conversational Shopping, told the company's newsroom that the point is continuity: an expert shopper who already knows your preferences "and carries that knowledge and understanding of you across your phone, laptop, and Echo devices," so you do not have to start over. Memory that follows you from an Echo to checkout is useful. It is also a reason to start the mission on Amazon instead of ChatGPT or Perplexity.

The 6x chart is older than the name
Similarweb's US desktop index of assistant visits that landed on an Amazon product page went from 100 in June 2025 to about 590 in May 2026. That is roughly six times, or about 490 percent, on an index, not a headcount of shoppers. The line peaked near 730 in December, then settled. May is still far above the prior-year baseline, so this is not only a holiday toy. It is also not a May miracle. Most of that climb was already on the chart before Amazon retired the Rufus name.
Artur Stanczuk at MarketMaze, working from a Similarweb exhibit compiled by Andrew Bell, is careful about what the series measures. A visit counts when an assistant surface recommended a product and a shopper clicked through to a product page. Questions asked on a listing that never leave that listing do not show up. Absolute traffic is not in the chart. We did not re-run Similarweb. The three points above are the endpoints MarketMaze reported. Treat a "537 percent year over year" headline as an indexed relative move unless the raw sessions are published.
