AI Foundation Models Now Power Delivery Robots

Vayu Robotics announced the launch of the world's first on-road Delivery Robot that combines AI foundation models with low-cost passive sensors. This innovation obviates the need expensive lidar technology, allowing the robot to operate autonomously without pre-mapping roads. The robot can navigate city streets, enter stores, and deliver packages weighing up to 100 lbs at speeds under 20mph.

Vayu Robotics was founded by industry veterans Anand Gopalan, Mahesh Krishnamurthi, and Nitish Srivastava, with Geoffrey Hinton serving as an advisor. The startup's approach combines a transformer-based mobility foundation model with a new passive sensor technology, aiming to create a more cost-effective and reliable delivery system than existing solutions. This technology stack is designed to address the longstanding challenges of scalability and cost in robotic delivery applications.

“The unique set of technologies we have developed at Vayu have allowed us to solve problems that have plagued delivery robots over the past decade," said co-founder and CEO, Anand Gopalan. "Finally [Vayu's] solution can actually be deployed at scale and enable the cheap transport of goods everywhere."

The company has already secured a significant commercial agreement with a major e-commerce player to deploy 2,500 robots for ultra-fast goods delivery. Additionally, Vayu is collaborating with a leading global robotics manufacturer to implement its sensing technology in other robotic applications. The startup raised $12.7 million in funding to support its mission of removing hardware and software bottlenecks in e-commerce delivery.

“At Khosla Ventures, we believe in backing businesses where critical and differentiated technologies can unlock a large market," explained Kanu Gulati, Partner at Khosla Ventures. "Vayu is a great example of this where they have deployed novel sensing and their AI foundation models to a robotic challenge that can have immense economic and societal impact."

This development could potentially revolutionize the e-commerce delivery sector by significantly reducing costs and improving efficiency. If successful, Vayu's technology could lead to more widespread adoption of autonomous delivery robots, particularly benefiting small businesses by providing them with access to seamless, cost-effective delivery solutions. The startup aims to expand its technology to other robot form factors, including quadrupedal and bipedal robots, potentially impacting various industries beyond e-commerce.

“Autonomous delivery robots are only the tip of the iceberg,” added Gopalan.
