The AI Debt Boom and Market Indigestion

Klauer highlighted that the market has seen an extraordinary surge in debt issuance over the past several months, specifically to fund the expansion of AI infrastructure. "We've had over $220,000,000,000 of debt issued so far this year, which is up more than double from 2025, and that's just year to date," she stated. This massive influx of debt is proving difficult for the market to absorb, leading to what she described as "indigestion."

The cost of this debt is also a significant factor. "Not only is the debt quite expensive, but there's so much of it. So it's difficult to find homes for it all. The coupons have gone up," Klauer explained. This means many companies are now facing much higher borrowing costs than they might have anticipated just six months ago.

Concerns Over Circular Financing

The conversation touched upon the concept of circular financing, where companies might offer financing to customers with the expectation that those customers will then purchase their products. Klauer acknowledged this as a legitimate concern for investors. "I think it, of course, is a concern because to offer financing to a customer and in turn expect that they will be buying your products is indeed circular financing," she said. "And so I think that this is a legitimate concern for all investors as they are examining these deals."

Headwinds for Data Center Expansion

Beyond the financial challenges, significant headwinds are emerging for the physical build-out of AI data centers. Klauer pointed to societal debates and pushback against specific projects in the United States, particularly ahead of midterm elections. "In states like Pennsylvania, New York, Texas, there are data centers that are facing whether it's regulatory or community concerns that are delaying some of the facility build outs," she noted.

These delays, coupled with existing shortages of skilled labor and critical components like chips, raise questions about the timeline for AI infrastructure development. "There are also shortages of workers to build out these facilities, and there also are strip shortages," Klauer added. "So all of this calls into question whether or not even these AI data centers will be built on time." The implication is that each month of delay translates to continued payment of expensive debt, further impacting project economics.
