Anthropic has inked a three-year Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Rwanda, formalizing a partnership aimed at deploying artificial intelligence across the nation's health, education, and public sector systems. This move signals Anthropic's strategic expansion into the African continent, building on a previous education collaboration.
The agreement will see Anthropic support Rwanda's ambitious health targets, including efforts to combat cervical cancer and reduce malaria and maternal mortality. This marks a significant step beyond its initial focus on educational tools.
Government developers will gain access to Anthropic's AI models, including Claude and Claude Code, alongside training and API credits. This initiative aims to empower public sector integration of AI solutions. This expansion into the Claude public sector aligns with the company's broader strategy for responsible AI deployment.
The partnership also deepens an existing education agreement, which previously provided Claude Pro licenses and AI literacy training. This latest MOU codifies the expansion of these efforts, including an AI learning companion deployed across eight African countries.
Rwanda's Minister of ICT and Innovation, Paula Ingabire, stated the partnership is crucial for developing AI solutions tailored to national needs. Elizabeth Kelly, Head of Beneficial Deployments at Anthropic, emphasized the importance of accessibility and capacity building for safe, independent AI use by public servants.
