Brineworks Secures €6.8M for Direct Air Capture E-Fuel Tech

Amsterdam-based ClimateTech startup Brineworks secured €6.8 million in new funding. SeaX Ventures led the round, with participation from Pale Blue Dot, First Momentum, AiiM Partners, Energie360°, and Katapult. This investment accelerates commercialisation of its ultra-low-cost Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology.

Brineworks develops breakthrough Direct Air Capture and hydrogen co-production technologies. The company aims for sub-€100/ton CO₂ capture. These innovations unlock affordable e-Fuel production.

The European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator also awarded Brineworks a €1.8 million grant in February. This grant further advances R&D and pilot deployment. Brineworks was founded in 2023 by Gudfinnur Sveinsson and Dr Joseph Perryman.

Advancing Carbon Capture for E-Fuels

Brineworks' patented electrolyzer runs flexibly on renewables. It operates when the sun shines or wind blows, pausing otherwise, without degrading performance. This capability solves a long-standing technical challenge for DAC systems.

The electrolyzer drives ultra low-cost DAC while co-producing significant hydrogen. These outputs provide critical building blocks for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and e-methanol for shipping. These sectors urgently need scalable, carbon-neutral alternatives.

Aviation accounts for 2.5% of global CO₂ emissions, while shipping contributes over 3%. Without innovations like Brineworks', these sectors lack a clear decarbonisation path. Competitors like Climeworks and Carbon Engineering also pursue carbon removal.

The new funding will scale the system to pilot level. Brineworks targets commercial readiness by the end of 2026. This technology enables nations to produce their own fuels, fostering energy independence.
