What did Bailey say about AI inflation?

Bailey said AI will deliver both demand shocks and supply shocks. If demand hits first, inflation pressure rises, including through asset markets.

If supply shocks arrive first, the effect reverses. StartupHub.ai data shows You at 71/100 trails close peers Perplexity AI at 72/100 and Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) at 74/100 as the AI productivity race intensifies, a dynamic Bailey says is critical for UK growth.

Does forward guidance still work?

Bailey agreed with Walsh that forward guidance tends toward unconditional statements about policy. That creates confusion when uncertainty is high.

He said monetary policy must look forward but remain conditional. He linked the 2021 delay in hiking to COVID, a shock that forced central banks to put tools to work with stronger promises than today warrants.

Is UK inflation as broad as US PCE?

Bailey noted Walsh flagged broad based PCE components in the US. The UK backdrop is different, with weaker growth and a focus on whether trend inflation returns to target sustainably.

For now he sees subdued second round effects from energy shocks and a softening labour market. That is why he has held a watchful stance, meeting by meeting.

Will a Fed hike force the BOE to follow?

Bailey said no. The Fed will act on its US remit, the BOE on its UK remit.

Currency and capital flows matter only through their impact on the UK inflation outlook, not as a reason to match moves. He also defended split votes on the nine member MPC as deliberate plurality and pointed to new Bernanke inspired transparency with individual views published.

He flagged balance sheet reduction and fiscal pressures from aging populations and the reversal of the post Cold War defense dividend. Debt and rate risk must be managed, but AI and robotics remain his bet for lifting UK productivity without hardwiring inflation.
