AI startup xAI is poised to secure a $2 billion investment from SpaceX. This significant capital infusion represents a major commitment from the aerospace firm into the artificial intelligence sector.
Strategic AI Investment
This SpaceX xAI investment forms part of a larger $5 billion equity raise. Morgan Stanley announced the broader funding initiative in late June, which also includes an additional $5 billion in debt. This marks one of SpaceX's largest investments in another company.
SpaceX already utilizes xAI’s Grok chatbot for customer service within its Starlink internet service. Furthermore, plans exist for expanded partnerships between the two entities.
This marks SpaceX's first direct investment in xAI.
The move highlights a trend of inter-company support among Elon Musk's ventures. For instance, xAI previously merged with X (formerly Twitter) earlier this year. This strategy differs from how some AI startups like OpenAI or Anthropic typically secure DeepTech funding. Despite recent controversies involving Grok, Tesla also plans to integrate the chatbot into its vehicles. This further demonstrates the interconnected nature of Musk's companies.
