Bernauer attributes this to a combination of factors, including environmental advocacy groups spreading misinformation and a regulatory environment that made projects prohibitively expensive. He highlights the current state of the energy grid, largely built in the 1960s and 70s, as aging and insufficient to meet growing energy demands, leading to frequent outages that can be catastrophic for businesses.

Radiant's Innovative Approach: Transportable Micro-Reactors

Drawing inspiration from his time at SpaceX, where he worked on the challenge of making life multi-planetary, Bernauer recognized the indispensable role of nuclear power for off-world applications. This realization spurred the creation of Radiant. "I didn't want to found a company. I had to do it because I knew that the mission that SpaceX itself had could not be achieved unless we had nuclear, and I wasn't able to work on it," he explains.

Radiant's solution is the Kidos micro-reactor, designed to be transportable by land, air, and sea. This circumvents the traditional challenges of building large, fixed nuclear facilities. "What we want to be doing is building reactors, not reactor buildings," Bernauer states. The Kidos reactor is designed to be above ground, movable, and to eliminate the need for customers to handle waste on-site. Once a customer has used the reactor, Radiant takes it back to its factory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, for refueling. "We handle all of the parts of the nuclear industry that customers didn't want," Shivanandan adds.

The comparison to a diesel generator is striking: "Anywhere you'd see a diesel generator, you could bring in a Kidos reactor. They're roughly the same size except you don't have to refill it every 8 hours." These reactors can provide power for five years and can be daisy-chained to power small cities or large data centers. The transportable nature of this power generation is unprecedented, opening up use cases that are still being imagined.

National Security and Future Potential

Dr. Rita Baranwal, Chief Nuclear Officer at Radiant, emphasizes the national security implications of energy independence. "Countries that rely on other nations for their energy have strings attached," she notes. Having a secure, domestic energy source is crucial for national security, and nuclear power is positioned to provide this.

The company's strategy hinges on factory-built reactors, which removes the uncertainties associated with on-site construction. "If you can change that dynamic to factory build, you take those uncertainties off the table," Bernauer explains. This approach allows for predictable costs and reliable output, transforming nuclear reactors into a potential commodity.

Testing and the Path Forward

Radiant is gearing up for a significant milestone: a full-power test of its reactor in the historic NRIC dome at Idaho National Laboratory by 2026. This dome, originally housing an experimental breeder reactor in the 1950s, has been repurposed for this critical test. "The maturity of their technology, the maturity of their planning, the benefits of that test are going to be in terms of a full power test over a significant period of time, which will be our first full power test at the laboratory in a very, very long time," says Dr. John Wagner, Director at Idaho National Laboratory, reflecting on the partnership formed between Radiant and the lab.

The company acknowledges the ambitious nature of its undertaking: "Nothing we're trying to do at Radiant is considered reasonable." Yet, this audacious stance is precisely what they believe is necessary to fundamentally change society's relationship with energy.
