The global AI race is heating up, with Chinese AI pioneer Moonshot reportedly preparing for a public listing within the next six months. This move could see the three-year-old startup valued at over $30 billion, signaling significant investor confidence in the company's trajectory. Moonshot recently introduced its Kimi K3 model, an open-weight AI model whose parameters are publicly available and customizable, a feature that has reportedly garnered substantial demand, even leading the company to temporarily pause new subscriptions.

According to Bloomberg's Anthony Stevens, the Kimi K3 model represents a significant step forward in AI innovation, particularly due to its scale and resource optimization. "So, there's a lot of software innovation in there in what is objectively a very large model," Stevens noted. He highlighted the model's memory efficiency and proprietary innovations aimed at optimizing the use of HBM and GPUs, crucial given China's constraints in these areas. The fact that the model was trained with these limitations in mind is seen as a key aspect for market observers.

China's AI Ambitions and South Korea's Market

Homin Lee, a senior macro strategist at Lombard Odier, discussed the broader market dynamics, stating that China poses a long-term threat to South Korea's memory bottleneck trade. "In the long run, the real threat to the memory bottleneck trade in South Korea comes from China," Lee said. He anticipates a narrative shift in favor of China's AI and semiconductor ecosystem in the second half of the year, driven by upcoming mega-listings and supportive government authorities. This shift, he believes, will bolster the Chinese AI story relative to South Korea.

Lee also touched upon the domestic situation in South Korea, noting the substantial impact of leveraged retail investors and the persistent memory bottleneck. Despite these challenges, he maintains a constructive view on the medium-term trajectory of the South Korean market, citing compelling valuations for memory makers. However, he emphasized that investors should keep a close eye on China's AI developments.

The conversation also explored the current market sentiment, with Lee acknowledging that while some sectors have seen excessive momentum, others, like financials, present compelling valuations and earnings stability. He noted that the valuations for South Korean memory makers have become more attractive following recent sell-offs, trading at forward P multiples close to six or seven for some names. This makes them a potentially compelling investment for the medium to long term, especially for diversified portfolios looking to navigate technical volatility.

Geopolitical Factors and Oil Outlook

The discussion then shifted to the geopolitical situation, particularly the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran, which has led to higher crude oil prices. Iliana Jain, an international economist at Westpac Banking Corporation, commented on the impact of these events on the Asia-Pacific region. "The situation in the Middle East seems to be changing every single week, but one thing we can be certain of is that any sort of geopolitical calmness... will be well received by policymakers," Jain stated.

Jain highlighted that countries like Indonesia, which are major energy consumers, are particularly sensitive to energy costs. Stabilization in energy prices would benefit Southeast and South Asia by easing the income squeeze caused by high energy costs, thereby supporting domestic demand. She also touched on Japan's economic situation, noting that the Bank of Japan is focusing on a broader set of indicators beyond CPI, aiming for a neutral and normal interest rate for the current economic environment. The services component of CPI and wage growth are key factors the Bank of Japan will be watching closely.

Addressing the risks for South Korea, Jain pointed out the bifurcated nature of the regional economy, with Northeast Asia's tech-heavy sector contrasting with the more exposed agriculture and energy-reliant economies of South and Southeast Asia. While South Korea's tech sector has been a strong driver, weaknesses are emerging outside of this sector, including weak domestic demand and a softer labor market. Jain cautioned that if the tech boom slows down, these underlying weaknesses could become more pronounced.

Regarding China's AI advancements, Jain acknowledged the rapid development and potential for overcapacity. However, she noted that South Korean technology benefits from a geopolitical security lens, particularly for Western countries, making it a more secure partner than China in the technology sphere. This advantage, she suggested, could benefit South Korea in the near term, although this dynamic might shift as China's confidence with the West grows.
