Paris-based Mistral AI is preparing to raise an additional $1 billion. This funding round targets a $10 billion valuation. The company develops open-weight, modular AI models.
Founders are former engineers from Meta and Google DeepMind. Notably, Mistral AI has already attracted investments from Nvidia, Andreessen Horowitz, and Abu Dhabi’s MGX fund. Microsoft also distributes Mistral’s models via Azure following a €15 million convertible bond investment.
Accelerating European AI Leadership
Mistral AI quickly gained traction with a €105 million Seed round, followed by a €600 million Series B raise. Consequently, its valuation reached €5.8 billion by June 2024. The upcoming capital will accelerate infrastructure build-out and global growth.
Its flagship products, Mistral Large and the Mixtral series, position it as a contender in the generative AI market. This offers an alternative to U.S. giants like OpenAI.
Mistral AI commits to open-source development and GDPR-aligned practices. Furthermore, it plans to construct a data center complex near Paris. This strategic move aims to bolster European AI technological sovereignty.
