Alice Recoque: Europe's Exascale AI Supercomputer Takes Shape

Europe is making a definitive statement in the global AI race with the announcement of Alice Recoque, France’s first and Europe’s second Exascale AI supercomputer. This monumental project, a collaboration between AMD and Eviden, signifies a critical leap for the continent's scientific computing and artificial intelligence capabilities. Set to be operational in 2025, Alice Recoque is poised to become a cornerstone for European digital sovereignty and innovation.

At its core, Alice Recoque will leverage next-generation AMD EPYC "Venice" CPUs and AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs, a new accelerator specifically engineered for sovereign AI and scientific computing. The MI430X GPUs are particularly noteworthy, integrating a massive 432 GB of HBM4 memory and delivering 19.6 TB/s of bandwidth, alongside support for advanced AI data types like FP4 and FP8. This formidable hardware foundation, interconnected by Eviden’s BXI network solution within its BullSequana XH3500 platform, ensures unparalleled capacity and throughput essential for the most demanding AI and HPC workloads.

This isn't merely a supercomputer; it's envisioned as an "AI Factory," designed to tackle Europe’s most pressing societal, scientific, and industrial challenges by integrating large-scale simulations, data analysis, and AI. From accelerating climate modeling and materials innovation to enabling digital twins for personalized medicine and supporting next-generation European AI models, Alice Recoque will cover the entire computing lifecycle. This comprehensive approach, backed by a 544 million euro investment, underscores a strategic commitment to fostering a robust ecosystem for AI research and industrialization across the continent.

The project represents a significant collaborative effort, funded by EuroHPC JU through the Digital Europe Programme, and the Jules Verne Consortium, led by France’s GENCI and CEA, with participation from the Netherlands’ SURF and Greece’s GRNET. This pan-European investment highlights a shared vision for digital independence and leadership, aiming to reduce reliance on external technological powers. The commitment from AMD and Eviden, as key technology providers, further solidifies a partnership focused on delivering a platform purpose-built for scale, efficiency, and discovery.

Efficiency and Sovereignty: Europe's Exascale Ambition

A critical aspect of Alice Recoque’s design is its emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainability, aligning with Europe’s demanding green computing goals. Eviden’s architecture promises to deliver maximum performance at minimum cost and power, boasting 25 percent fewer racks and components than other Exascale systems and up to 50 percent better energy efficiency per GPU. This is achieved through innovations like Eviden’s unique 5th generation Direct Liquid Cooling technology, which cools 100% of all-in-one rack components with warm water, and its Argos intelligent software for real-time monitoring and energy optimization.

The implications for the global tech landscape are substantial, positioning AMD as a dominant force in the high-performance computing and AI accelerator market, directly challenging competitors. For Europe, Alice Recoque is more than just a powerful machine; it is a strategic asset that will empower researchers and industries, fostering a new era of scientific and industrial breakthroughs. This investment in sovereign AI infrastructure is a clear signal of Europe's determination to lead in critical technological domains, cultivating local talent and innovation.

Alice Recoque stands as a testament to Europe's ambition to secure its digital future, defined by sovereignty, sustainability, and scientific excellence. This Exascale AI supercomputer will not only accelerate discovery across diverse fields but also serve as a blueprint for future collaborative projects, solidifying Europe’s position at the forefront of global technological advancement. Its deployment marks a pivotal moment, shaping the trajectory of AI and HPC for decades to come.
