Ryan Ahern, a full-stack engineer at Exa, told AI Engineer that its new Snapshot feature lets developers run the same search as if it were yesterday, last week or last month.

Speaking on AI Engineer, Ahern described himself as a "forward deployed engineer" and said Exa runs "we have our own crawling infrastructure, our own database, our own embedding model, our own retrieval architecture".
AI Engineer reported that he said the company works with "hedge funds, asset managers, sovereign wealth funds, VCs" because they need the latest information, noting hedge funders are "looking in the market for alpha" and VCs who say "I need the hottest startup. I need to know the in next instant before they blow up."
Agentic web search is search built for AI agents that call tools to fetch fresh pages instead of answering from model weights, and Ahern argued that difference matters because Exa powers retrieval for coding agents like Cursor and slide tools like Gamma that need live docs, earnings or startup links.
Snapshot, Ahern said, stores every crawl as a dated version across what he described as an index of about 100 billion documents tracking trillions of URLs, so developers can either pull content versioning for a single URL as of a date or run version search that replays a full query against the past index.
Ahern promoted quality, cost and latency with claims of sub-300 millisecond search and a regenerative benchmark that avoids static hill climbing, yet Exa also claims on its site to lead across FRAMES, Tip-of-Tongue and Seal0 as of October 2026, and neither claim comes with independent proof that Snapshot's dated pages match what a live search would have returned on that day or how truncation for token savings affects recall.
To make backtesting concrete Ahern used OpenAI's disputed annualized revenue reported as 70 billion versus 50 billion depending on gross versus net accounting and a KYC check on a public figure like Ed Sheeran to show how live search leaks future knowledge that Snapshot can hide by freezing the index one day, seven days or 30 days before an outcome and scoring features plus one for a true acquisition call and minus one for a false positive.
