The launch pulls Anthropic's most capable model to date inside Snowflake's perimeter. No external API hop required.

Affected systems are preview customers running Snowflake CoWork, CoCo, Cortex Agents, Cortex AI Functions and Cortex Inference. Access requires local authentication to Snowflake, not a remote public endpoint.

How Claude Fable 5.1 runs inside Snowflake

Think of it as bringing the model to the vault instead of shipping vault data to the model. Inference stays governed where the data already lives.

Analysts can call it with SQL through AI_COMPLETE('claude-fable-5-1', PROMPT(...)) for multimodal pipelines over structured and unstructured data. Developers can point the Anthropic SDK at the Snowflake Cortex Inference endpoint using a Snowflake Bearer token.

Two model-level changes matter here. Adjustable effort levels let you trade reasoning depth for latency on a per-task basis. Built-in self-verification loops let the model check its own work, which helps with longer autonomous runs.

Vision gets a bump too. Snowflake says Fable 5.1 improves extraction from charts, tables and scientific figures in document parsing.

What changes for builders, and what is still open

For builders, this is a governance win. You get stronger reasoning and agentic coding without replicating data, permissions or audit trails outside Snowflake.

A same-day private preview on Snowflake shows Anthropic running a dual track: direct cloud plus governed data-cloud distribution, which is where enterprises actually keep regulated data.

What is still open is access and clarity. Private preview means limited availability, no public pricing or performance benchmarks in the Snowflake post, plus a forward-looking disclaimer that offerings may change.

Builders should still treat this as early-stage enterprise AI. Scope CoCo and CoWork agents to least privilege, review code and extraction outputs, and test effort settings against your latency and cost constraints before going to production.
