# Alexa for Shopping is not the whole Amazon story _Amazon scores 81 on StartupHub and a D for agent readiness. Alexa for Shopping rebranded Rufus; Similarweb's 6x PDP jump mostly happened first._ **Published:** 2026-09-11 **Source:** https://www.startuphub.ai/ai-news/market-research/2026/alexa-for-shopping-amazon-rufus-is-not-the-whole-story --- Amazon's shopping assistant has a new name and a loud chart. On StartupHub, [Amazon](/startups/amazon) still scores 81, and our [Agent Readiness](/agent-readiness) scan from 7 August 2026 grades the public site a D (41 of 100). Alexa for Shopping is a real product. It is also a rebrand of Rufus, and the traffic spike people are hanging on the rename mostly happened while the chatbot still had the old name. On 13 May 2026 Amazon [said it was folding Rufus into Alexa+](https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/retail/alexa-for-shopping-ai-assistant) and putting the result in the main search bar, the shopping app, and Echo Show. The company called it "the world's best, most personalized AI assistant for shopping." It is free for signed-in US customers. Prime is not required. Rufus, Amazon says, still runs parts of the experience in the background. Rajiv Mehta, Amazon's vice president of Conversational Shopping, told the company's newsroom that the point is continuity: an expert shopper who already knows your preferences "and carries that knowledge and understanding of you across your phone, laptop, and Echo devices," so you do not have to start over. Memory that follows you from an Echo to checkout is useful. It is also a reason to start the mission on Amazon instead of [ChatGPT](/startups/openai) or [Perplexity](/startups/perplexity). ![](https://bsmromhjxdnndenlrpgx.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/entity-images/logos/bdb6af1c-7992-41ef-afbe-879668714862-square.webp) [Amazon](/startups/amazon) Global e-commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence company. StartupHub score81Agent ReadinessD (41/100)HQSeattleFounded1994 ## The 6x chart is older than the name Similarweb's US desktop index of assistant visits that landed on an Amazon product page went from 100 in June 2025 to about 590 in May 2026. That is roughly six times, or about 490 percent, on an index, not a headcount of shoppers. The line peaked near 730 in December, then settled. May is still far above the prior-year baseline, so this is not only a holiday toy. It is also not a May miracle. Most of that climb was already on the chart before Amazon retired the Rufus name. Alexa-originated Amazon product-page visits. Jun 2025: Indexed visits 100. Dec 2025: Indexed visits 730. May 2026: Indexed visits 590. Similarweb US desktop index of assistant-originated Amazon product-page visits, June 2025 = 100. Endpoints as reported by MarketMaze from a Similarweb exhibit. Indexed growth, not absolute traffic. Artur Stanczuk at [MarketMaze](https://www.marketmaze.me/p/alexa-shopping-pdp-traffic-sixfold), working from a Similarweb exhibit compiled by Andrew Bell, is careful about what the series measures. A visit counts when an assistant surface recommended a product and a shopper clicked through to a product page. Questions asked on a listing that never leave that listing do not show up. Absolute traffic is not in the chart. We did not re-run Similarweb. The three points above are the endpoints MarketMaze reported. Treat a "537 percent year over year" headline as an indexed relative move unless the raw sessions are published. Amazon's own figures are a different dataset and should stay that way. Rufus reached more than 300 million customers in 2025, the company said. On the following earnings call, Andy Jassy said monthly active users were up more than 115 percent and engagement up nearly 400 percent year over year. Amazon has also said Rufus users are more than 60 percent more likely to complete a purchase. That last number describes the people who open the assistant. High-intent shoppers convert. It does not prove the assistant created the intent. ## Amazon wants to run the agent [GeekWire's Todd Bishop](https://www.geekwire.com/2026/amazon-unifies-alexa-and-rufus-as-ai-rivals-move-into-online-shopping/) put the competitive frame on launch day. [OpenAI](/startups/openai), [Google](/startups/google), and Perplexity have been adding shopping features. Google has tried in-chat checkout with retailers such as Walmart. OpenAI pulled back on in-chat checkout in March after it failed to get traction. In March a federal judge blocked Perplexity's Comet browser from shopping on Amazon on behalf of users, then stayed the order pending appeal. Amazon called the ruling "an important step in maintaining a trusted shopping experience." Jassy compared third-party shopping agents to the early search engines that sent traffic to e-commerce, and said Amazon's aim is "the best shopping assistant anywhere." That is why the Agent Readiness number belongs here. The scanner is a public tool. It scores a site on 27 checks across discoverability, content, access, capabilities, commerce, and quality: whether an outside agent can read the page, negotiate markdown, find an API or MCP server, and complete a machine-readable purchase. Amazon's scan on 7 August 2026 came back 41, grade D. Google sits at 49, still a D. Perplexity is 40, also a D. OpenAI is 39, F. None of the companies building shopping agents make it easy for someone else's agent to operate on their storefront. Amazon is not failing a trivia quiz. It is choosing a door. If you sell on Amazon, the useful question is narrower than the keynote. Watch assistant-originated product-page traffic as its own path, distinct from keyword rank. Ask whether Alexa describes your listing accurately. Treat a sponsored prompt inside the assistant as a different buy from a sponsored product on the grid. The rename is marketing. The funnel change started in 2025, while it was still called Rufus. --- Original analysis from [startuphub.ai](https://www.startuphub.ai), the #1 AI startup directory.
