# OpenAI WAN-IFRA AIRPPU Ukraine AI initiative _OpenAI, WAN-IFRA and AIRPPU will train and fund AI pilots for ten Ukrainian regional newsrooms, with API credits and a Masterclass plus Catalyst._ **Published:** 2026-09-07 **Source:** https://www.startuphub.ai/ai-news/artificial-intelligence/2026/openai-wan-ifra-airppu-ukraine-ai-initiative --- Ten Ukrainian regional newsrooms will get OpenAI API credits and hands-on help building AI workflows under the OpenAI WAN-IFRA AIRPPU Ukraine AI initiative, [OpenAI News](https://openai.com/index/supporting-independent-journalism-in-ukraine) announced September 7. The program is run by the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine, along with WAN-IFRA and [OpenAI](https://www.startuphub.ai/ai-news/investors-news/2026/softbank-s-65b-openai-bet-sparks-investor-concern). It targets sustainability under war. ## What the ten newsrooms actually get The structure splits into two tracks. Newsroom AI covers editorial workflows, while Business Transformation focuses on commercial and operational change. The Newsroom AI Masterclass Series started August 5. It brings international practitioners in to share implementation strategies across workflows, audience, product, revenue and responsible adoption. The Newsroom AI Catalyst launches September 17. It gives deeper support to ten publishers selected by AIRPPU, who will pick high-impact use cases, build roadmaps and pilot bespoke solutions. All participants receive OpenAI API credits. That lowers the cost of experimentation, though it doesn't fix the harder constraints. Power, displacement and a collapsed ad market still decide whether a pilot survives. Oksana Brovko, CEO of AIRPPU, put the goal plainly: give journalists back time to do journalism. ## Why this pairing keeps happening WAN-IFRA has backed Ukrainian media since the full-scale invasion in 2022. Its CEO, Stig Ørskov, said independent journalism in wartime safeguards the public record and ensures Ukraine's story is told by Ukrainians. OpenAI has worked with WAN-IFRA since 2024 to let publishers test and shape AI use in news. This is an extension of that playbook, not a new product. Tom Rubin, OpenAI's chief of intellectual property and content, framed it as support for sustainability rather than automation of reporting itself. That's the right pitch. Regional publishers don't need generic chatbots. They need transcription, translation, archiving and audience tools that cut hours without cutting accuracy. The gap to watch is access. API credits help in Kyiv and Lviv. They matter less if local newsrooms lack stable connectivity or staff to maintain custom tools after the program ends. Ten pilots will show quickly which use cases stick when the consultants leave. --- Original analysis from [startuphub.ai](https://www.startuphub.ai), the #1 AI startup directory.
