# Weco's Aiden won Parameter Golf on 4% of compute _Weco AI detailed how its Aiden agent won OpenAI's 16MB, 10-minute parameter golf with seven merged records on 4% of compute._ **Published:** 2026-10-12 **Source:** https://www.startuphub.ai/ai-news/ai-research/2026/weco-s-aiden-won-parameter-golf-on-4-of-compute --- Weco AI's Zhengyao Jiang and Dixing Xu used [AI Engineer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RFJRDYroic) to dissect how their agent Aiden became the top contributor to OpenAI's Parameter Golf, a model-craft challenge where weights plus code must fit in 16 megabytes and training must finish in 10 minutes. It won by spending less. Dixing Xu said the 44-day contest drew around 1,006 researchers who filed 248 pull requests and burned roughly $250,000 in GPU compute, with only 47 merges from 31 contributors. Aiden, a self-improving multi-agent system built on the [Claude](https://www.startuphub.ai/ai-news/technology/2026/claude-fable-5-arrives-on-databricks) and GPT families, landed seven merged leaderboard records. That was twice the next best human, and Xu said 435 downstream PRs built on Aiden's work, giving it the highest PR H-index in the competition. Cost was the tell. Aiden used 4% of community compute to take 15% of merged records, or 3.7 times the field average for efficiency, and scored lowest bits per byte on the FineWeb validation set. Zhengyao Jiang framed AutoResearch as a tight loop: give the model code and a replayable eval script, it keeps ideas that improve a single scalar and discards the rest. The pattern is not new. Andrej Karpathy popularized the same loop for training scripts, and [OpenAI](https://www.startuphub.ai/ai-news/ai-research/2026/terence-tao-ai-is-reducing-cognitive-friction-in-math) had already evaluated Weco's earlier agent AID on MLE-Bench in April 2024, where it scored about four times the medal rate of the next best agent. Context matters because two other teams have pushed the same idea in production. [Instacart](https://mlnotes.substack.com/p/the-autoresearch-loop-how-instacart) runs a three-stage agentic modeling loop that it said cut delivery error by 4.8%, while a [MindStudio](https://www.startuphub.ai/startups/mindstudio) guide traces the AutoResearch loop directly to Karpathy's edit-run-keep-or-discard cycle now copied for backend, prompt and inference work. Weco's twist is structure. Jiang and colleagues described a tree search where every node is a code version with a score, plus observability into diffs and steerability that lets a human inject ideas mid-run. The workshop made that concrete with mini Parameter Golf, a scaled version that swaps FineWeb for a tiny dataset so evals finish in minutes. The source file is solution.py, the eval command must print a single number, the metric is validation BPB to minimize, and the team capped runs at 20 steps with a 210 second budget per step. That splits into 60 seconds to train, 60 to test and 90 for overhead like spinning up Modal GPUs. Guidance comes from a markdown file, which can nudge the agent toward compression, quantization or weight sharing. The limit is also the risk. Jiang warned agents love to reward hack, so a noisy or gameable eval burns tokens and hill climbs the wrong hill. Steerability was the fix in the real contest. The team showed a pink line that plateaued for five days from April 15 to 19 while Aiden tried attention and compression tweaks, then a blue line where a community member's new tokenizer appeared. Within eight hours Aiden fused the tokenizer with its own work and posted the biggest jump in weeks. It was not set and forget. For teams eyeing the loop, the message was practical, not triumphal. Build a fast, cheap, low-noise eval, bound it with timeouts, keep the metric scalar, and keep a human in the branch. Aiden worked because it could be steered. --- Original analysis from [startuphub.ai](https://www.startuphub.ai), the #1 AI startup directory. © StartupHub.ai. All rights reserved.
